Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

  1. What is Run for Peace?

Run for Peace is a biennial, non-competitive event organised by Soka Gakkai Malaysia (SGM). It aims to bring together people of all backgrounds—especially youth—to come together for the sake of peace. More than just a run, it is a platform to raise awareness that peace begins with each individual and to inspire action toward a harmonious and sustainable society.

  1. Who is Soka Gakkai Malaysia (SGM)?

Soka Gakkai Malaysia (SGM) is a non-governmental organisation (NGO) that promotes peace, culture, and education based on the humanistic philosophy of Nichiren Buddhism. "Soka" means "value creation." We believe every individual has the potential to overcome challenges and contribute meaningfully to society, regardless of race, gender, or background.

  1. Why Run for Peace?

Soka Gakkai International (SGI) President Dr. Daisaku Ikeda once said, "Nothing is more precious than peace. Nothing brings more happiness. Peace is the most basic starting point for the advancement of humankind."

The roots of this peace movement can be traced back to September 8, 1957, when second Soka Gakkai president Josei Toda made a powerful declaration calling for the abolition of nuclear weapons. He emphasised that the real enemy is not the weapons themselves but the destructive mindset that seeks to dominate or harm others.

Run for Peace is a way for ordinary citizens to take a stand for peace, challenge destructive ways of thinking, and embrace values of empathy, respect, and coexistence. By participating in the Run for Peace, participants from all walks of life unite to build a culture of peace in their communities and promote the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)—all starting with small actions in daily life.

Through this collective effort, participants can become agents of change and contribute to a brighter future for all.
