Soka Gakkai Malaysia (SGM) is an organisation that promotes peace in society through cultural exchanges and humanistic education, based on the life affirming philosophy of Nichiren Buddhism. “Soka” means value creation. 1. Why Run for Peace?

Soka Gakkai International (SGI) President Dr. Daisaku Ikeda once said, “Nothing is more precious than peace. Nothing brings more happiness. Peace is the most basic starting point for the advancement of humankind.” The origin of Soka Gakkai peace movement dates back to 8 Sept 1957 where Soka Gakkai’s second president Josei Toda made his historic declaration calling for the abolition of nuclear weapons. Mr. Toda stressed that behind the existence of nuclear weapons lurks the devilish aspect of human life that seeks to control and destroy others. The Run for Peace is one of the ways in which SGM seeks to raise public awareness about the importance of promoting nuclear abolition and encouraging civil citizens to challenge ways of thinking that justify hate, violence and discrimination. Although nuclear abolition may seem like a faraway issue, the event emphasises that peace begins with the individual and can be cultivated in daily life through acts of kindness, compassion, and understanding. By participating in the Run for Peace, individuals can unite with others from all walks of life to build a culture of peace and make a positive difference in their communities. Through this collective effort, participants can become agents of change and contribute to a brighter future for all.
